October Design House……Moved to the Lucketts Store

We’ve learned over the years that it is insanely hard to give ourselves just a few short weeks to pull together the Holiday Open House. It is so incredibly layered and intricately displayed that I can say in earnest, many nervous breakdowns have been had in the pursuit of pulling that house together.

So last year after it was all said and done, we all agreed we needed to give ourselves a little more breathing room and maybe not have an October Design House. So as soon as the September House was over, we started breaking the house down, emptying it out, painting and as we say in the biz….”setting the bones”  for the Holiday House.

What we didn’t account for, is that we still found loads of gorgeous fall stuff… and still did all of the buying as if we were having a fall Design House…. so we have recreated a fall Design House in the main room at the Old Lucketts Store. New furnishings, gorgeous textiles, and lots of great tabletop items from marble cutting boards to french stemware…It is absolutely gorgeous and will be all ready by this weekend Oct 2-3-4..

We hope you stop by to check it out!

Vintage Camper and Chicken Coop

We all have our hobbies…. Some of us play sports, or fish, or sew… but for Amy Whyte, lead designer at the Design House, she is at her most relaxed and happy when she is searching for vintage campers online. Actually not just when she is searching for them, but when she finally has the perfect score of a camper that has all the bones of cuteness, needs just the right amount of restoration, and is the right price.

Aahhh nirvana!

One of Amys most recent projects came about when we both were talking about getting some chickens so we could have fresh eggs.

Most of the premade chicken coops we found were well over a thousand dollars, which we couldn’t justify. Amy quickly found an old beat up camper advertised as “beat up camper…first $200 takes it”  perfect!

She told me to not even look at it when it pulled up…as I would probably have a heart attack.

It was dank…dirty…brown…overall pretty nasty…

But my job wasn’t to worry about the camper, my job was to find chickens that lay pretty eggs. So I spent my mornings at Southern states learning about Cuckoo Marans and Americaunas.

Amy, meanwhile, transformed that nasty camper into the cutest chicken coop you have ever seen. She recruited Henry to help gut the interior, scrubbed and painted the exterior, and reimagined the interior to be a chickens paradise.

Ladies and gentleman…

The Lucketts Flea is here!

lucketts flea backThe Lucketts Flea is back again July 4-5-6, and spaces are available!  We are excited to be hosting these events the first weekend of the month — it’s a great chance for vendors to sell their finds, and for our customers to see more great stuff on the weekend!

SO WHAT’S THE LUCKETTS FLEA?  – These are smaller-scale outdoor markets held every first weekend March thru December on our property from 10am to 5pm.

WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?  – First off, we got tired of saying no.  We get asked (a lot) about how to become part of Lucketts; how you can sell your stuff, and how to get started (or more exposure) for your goods.  We’ve rarely had vendor space open up at the shop, so this is a great chance to sell at the shop.  Secondly, it helps us get to know you.  A big part of this business is being able to “bring it” each and every time, to have a steady flow of finds or projects for sale, and of course, to have really great stuff.  These markets are a great way for us to get to know you and your style, so when a spot in the shop opens, we have an idea of who would be a great fit.

WHO CAN SIGN UP?  – Anyone with great vintage and antique stuff – you can be a newbie or a seasoned vendor.  You must call to reserve your space in advance and prepay before the flea (Please note: dates may sell out).

WHAT’S THE COST?  – Spaces are $75 for a 10 foot x 10 foot space for the entire weekend (Fri-Sat-Sun). You will need to bring what you need to show off and display your space (tent, tables, decorations, if needed)

HOW CAN I SIGN UP? –  You can reserve a spot and pay via phone by calling the store (703-779-0268).   Please direct any and all questions to our shop via email:  luckettstore@gmail.com, or call our store (703-779-0268) during business hours (10am-5pm).

WHEN IS THE NEXT ONE? – We have several more Fleas planned for 2014:

  • July 4-5-6
  • August 1-2-3
  • September 5-6-7
  • October 3-4-5
  • November 7-8-9
  • December 5-6-7

Call the shop if you’re interested.  We’d love to see what you bring!

Gettin’ ready for the ‘hog —- a few notes for the 2014 event

While we’re crazy busy getting ready for our 18th annual Groundhog Sale this Friday, I thought it would be a good idea to give you a few heads ups…

1. I am working with the gods every day to keep the ground frozen, and the temperature up, but it looks like they will only be cooperating on one of those requests.ghog2_

It is currently supposed to go into the 40’s this weekend, which will be balmy and wonderful, but it will be hard to keep the ground frozen…which means it’s gonna be a skosh muddy ..

So it will be a good time to bust out those adorable mud boots we all know you have jammed in the back of your closet.

2. The Design House will be set up for a mega sale….not a new fresh adorable Design House…our first fresh new house will be in March….So be looking for incredible deals a little more than fresh new inspiration.

(I feel like I’m saying “fresh” too much)

3. Always pull both the Sale tag and the original tags when grabbing tags on furniture, as someone might come behind you and purchase the piece with the original tag.( now I’m saying “tags too much!)

4. Please put tags back if you changghog1_e your mind, as we don’t know if someone is walking around with the tag, so we cannot sell a piece once the tags are pulled… We do go around in the evening and reprice stuff that customers did not put the tags back on, but life would be a whole lot easier, if y’all put them back if you change your mind. (again with all the “tags” “tag-tag-tag”)

5. We will have 2 indoor checkouts and one outdoor checkout at Lucketts to help keep everything moving

6. All sales are one hundred percent final at the G Hog and please do not ask for any further discounts as many of these items are priced below cost.

7. And as always please be kind and patient with your fellow shoppers, as it will be a beautiful ( ok maybe a little messy) weekend!

Love,

Our New Website is Here!

new websiteThe site you’re looking at right now has been in the works for a while now.  Once we got our new logo, we knew we needed to revamp the entire look of the site.  (Plus our website was several years old and the process to make updates behind the scenes was pretty cumbersome.)

Maybe you remember our old logo:

Lucketts Bird LogoWell, it’s been refreshed & updated.  Here is our new logo designed by Reni of Bliss & Tell Branding Company:

New Lucketts WatermarkBut we couldn’t stop there.  We liked the new logo so much, we put it on our business cards, hang tags, t-shirts, and then asked Reni to create a new website for us.

lucketts brandingHere is a screenshot of our old site below.  It looked great, but we needed to freshen it up a bit and make it easier to update.   We wanted to move our blog from blogger, and contain it within the same site.  We also wanted an easier way to update the front page and post photos for our “Fresh Picks” (formerly Fresh Off the Wagon) and Design House sections.

So here’s the old site…

old website2

The last few months have been a busy getting ready for the holidays.  We were hit hard with lots of glitter and faux snow for November & December, so work stopped on the new site for a while.  But now here it is…

new websiteMost of the information is the same, but we tried to expand on a few areas and make it easier for you to find the information you need.

The top navigation will bring you to directions for our store in Leesburg, a link to our online store, and photos & information on our Design House.

top navThe main navigation has many of the same links our old site had, with a few new ones.  You will find a link to our homepage, the blog, an about us page called “our story“, a list of upcoming shop events, design house photos and information, a link to the online store, a link to “fresh picks” a.k.a. our new items in shop, workshop info., and information about how to find us.

The grey buttons near the top link to our e-mail address list sign-up page, our Facebook page, Pinterest, Twitter, our RSS subscription feed link (for updates posted on the website& blog), our email address, and our Flickr account (which has more photos from around the shop and events).

We’re constantly tweaking things and hope to add more photos soon.  We’re also working out the details for workshops for the upcoming year, so look for those pages to be expanded.

So what do you think about the new site?  Leave us a comment below!

Guest Designer Kathy Wall at the Oct. 4-5-6 Design House!

We are super-excited to welcome Kathy Wall for next weekend’s Design House!

Kathy has been bringing her finds in to our farmhouse throughout September, primping and preening, getting ready for the October 4-5&6 Design House.

We’ve all been wondering what Kathy is going to whip up.  She’s decided on a style she calls mix ‘n chic in a girly office. Kathy found a fabulous
Chinoiserie buffet with mirrored panels and faux bamboo and a pair of great bookcases.  There will be glossy black and white, which some yellow and orange accents, oversized houndstooth pattern sprinkled around, upholstered pieces, and of course tons of layered accessories.

We can’t wait!

Kathy has been shopping, selling, and staging vintage finds for more years than she cares to admit.  She’s had her own storefront, shared shop space with other vintage vendors, and participated in vintage markets.

Kathy describes her look as eclectic.  She buys what she likes whether it’s vintage or new, traditional or modern, the mix always works.  Kathy has her home is her canvas where creates her design experiments. Kathy’s blog, All About Vignettes, is where she shares the results of her decor experiments, vintage finds, and shop/vintage market events.

Kathy’s sun room is a mix of Chinoiserie, Mid Century Modern, and Craigslist finds and got her featured on The Nate Berkus Show.  On the show, Kathy shared with Nate’s viewers how she pulled together the room inexpensively with a high end result.

Recently, Kathy’s home was featured on Houzz as a Home Tour.  Kathy said “I think it showed how much fun I have mixing vintage finds with new decor.  And of course many of those fabulous vintage treasures have come from my favorite shopping resource, Lucketts Store.”

Here’s what the intro to the Houzz article said:

“Artfully layered accessories and patterns plus an eclectic furniture mix make for intriguing decor with vintage flair.

Homeowner Kathleen Wall calls her style vintage with a twist. But what does she twist? Try Corinthian columns, faux snakeskin and layer upon layer of patterns and accessories. Her design experiments — as the retired teacher, interior design dabbler and blogger behind All About Vignettes calls them — take place in her family’s 1970s Maryland home.

Wall has used her style over the past two decades to transform an exterior once marked with minimal landscaping and a dated interior into a home that’s full of unique design. “My goal is to inspire you to think out of the box and break some design rules along the way,” she says. ”

Kathy has done such a beautiful job, we can’t wait to see how everything comes together for the October 4-5-6 Design House, a short walk across the parking lot at The Old Lucketts Store.

Follow Kathy on her blog, All About Vignettes, and on her Facebook page.
